Author Topic: Final anti spam measure  (Read 1060 times)

I've put the final anti spam measure in place this morning, which is to block India, Bangladesh, Russia, and the Ukraine. I'm not a fan of country blocking, but these countries are the route cause of 99% of the spam sign ups we've had, and not one genuine account has come from them.
Going to let it run for a few weeks, and see if we get any false positives, before I make it a permanent measure to prevent the spam accounts signing up ;)

What about Nigeria Chris? :))
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to his country for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.'

 :)) :)) :))
Strangely, we don't get any from there. Worst offenders on here are Bangladesh and India. The new anti-spam I put in place a bit back, seems to have done the trick with the bot registration attempts, as it confuses them, buy adding an extra page to the registration process, with a little image verification on. I've blocked the countries at route level, meaning they can't even see the forum, never mind try to register :)) So apart from the odd human spammer, I'm hoping the spam attempts will now be next to nothing. Which if it works, means I can switch off the need for the 2 initial posts approval ;) Just need to keep an eye on it for a few weeks now, and see what gets through the registration process, even though you guys never actually see any spam on here ;)

I know what a bloody nuisance it can be.   On the LASG forum, before I only allowed registration through me directly, I could spend an hour a day just getting rid of spam.

Not that many were getting through to the point of actually posting on here, it just saves me searching through members list, and deleting spam accounts.
To give you an idea of how much they bombard the forum, this is a 10 mins snap shot of just the Ukraine activity. Indian traffic seems to come through the night:

And that is happening 24 hours a day, 365 days a year LOL All denied access to the forum at route level, so all they get is a server error  ;D

I used to get the vast majority of mine from Russia and the Ukraine. >:(

I'm only adding the most extreme offenders, as I really don't like doing country wide blocks. We do get the odd one or two from the Philippines and Vietnam, but they are very minor, and don't usually get passed the initial sign up stages. Blocked the best part of 200 IP's since I put it in place this morning LOL

Leave Nigeria alone. We're a bit short on laughs. Anyway you can direct them to Pete's section Chris?  :))
